This is an abridged version of the third section on rhetoric (balagha) from Sakkaki’s (d. 626/1229) famous Arabic literature work, Miftah al-‘Ulum, which was created by Khatib al-Qazwini (d. 739/1338).
This valuable work was highly sought after by scholars and was taught for many years in Ottoman madrasahs, surviving to the present day.
Khatib al-Qazwini, who was fluent in Arabic, Turkish, and Persian and was considered an authority in Arabic rhetoric, Arabic language, jurisprudence, usul al-fiqh, and theology, transformed rhetoric in his work Talkhis al-Miftah. He moved it beyond being merely a feeling that is experienced but cannot be described, turning it into a scientific discipline with specific definitions, principles, and rules that can be easily explained to others.
Numerous works have been produced on Khatib al-Qazwini’s Talkhis al-Miftah and his commentary on it, al-Idah, which were used as textbooks in Ottoman madrasahs for centuries. These works include commentaries, sub-commentaries, annotations, abridgments, and poetic renditions.
